The client wanted a male angel on a celestial setting. I immediately remembered Serra Angel and Avacyn from the Magic The Gathering universe and tried from the beginning to avoid the "fantasy armoured warrior angel" type of character that, although being very cool and having been beautifully painted by awesome artists (such as Jason Chan) is not really fresh anymore. So I went for a more classic and ancient history kind of character and tried to show him as he hovers in mid-air, making ready to rain punishment upon the wicked. At first, my idea was that he is somehow concentrating light into that ethereal sword in order to send it towards a target. Later, I thought that the sword could be a sort of divine pointer, showing him who shall be struck down next. I also thought that four wings worked better than two.
Made with B, 3B and 6b graphite pencils over A3 size paper (29,7cm x 42 cm). Sun rays were made with a rubber. I then scanned the drawing and made value adjustments in Photoshop. The blur effects on the sword and the wings were also made in Ps.
